Foinikia

One of Santorini treasures

Before entering Oia, on your right, you soon find yourself into Finikia village.

Finikia is a beautiful traditional village, sculpted into the walls of a ravine, which maintains its quiet residential character.

It used to be full with ‘Canaves’ (cave-like wine cellars) where locals would produce and store their delightful Santorinian wines. These caves have been in constant use for the past centuries, making Finikia one of the oldest – and most beautiful for many – villages of the island.

Although most of them have been transformed into houses, there is still a few used by residents to produce their family’s wine of the year. Explore the village’s narrow alleys and make sure you visit Panagia Matrona, the village’s most prominent church. Here, one of the biggest ‘Panigiri’ (religious feast) of Santorini takes place in October. It is a feast that is much celebrated with live music and endless good Greek wine and food, by foreigners and locals alike.
There are two lovely restaurants for you to make a stop at, offering traditional Greek delicacies and dishes cooked in typical Mediterranean style. While wandering around Finikia, please make sure to be as quiet as possible, keeping in mind that houses – and their bedrooms – are just meters away from your feet.
